Tips + Tricks: Fireplace Edition

Close your eyes and envision this with me, you’re walking into your dream family room…what is one of the first things you see?

Not sure about you, but I definitely saw a beautiful fireplace. Fireplaces are usually the main focal point of a family room, it’s where our eyes first draw us to. I want to share with you a few steps that are important when it comes to creating a fireplace so that you are ready and knowledgeable on what you need to know!

Whether you are starting from a clean slate, or wanting to make small, budget-friendly changes, the first step you need to do is decide your budget and the goal of the fireplace. What would you use the fireplace for…function, decor, or both? Would you like it with or without a mantel? Picture this, above the fireplace, would there be a television, or is it space for decor? Consider these options as you plan out and envision your space.

One of the most important steps to remember is to make sure that you have a clean and working fireplace before the changes begin. If there are parts that may need to be replaced it is always better to know before hand, that way if you need to fix something, you do it before the beautiful additions are put in. There is nothing worse than finding out there is something that needs to be changed out after everything is already added in.

If you have a budget, there are always ways to save while still having your space look incredible and new! For example, instead of having the surface around the fireplace run all the way up to the ceiling with your material of choice, you can choose to stop at the mantle and paint the rest of the wall. I am speaking from my own experience! With my fireplace, I stopped at the mantle, and because I painted the remaining wall space, I was able to go with a more expensive marble material that I absolutely love! On the other hand, if you do find a material such as a nice wood paneling, natural stone, a fun chevron or herringbone tile, having a material that runs all the way up to the ceiling can bring an elegant look to the space as well as giving an illusion of higher ceilings.

Once your fireplace has been maintenance and you have made design decisions based on your budget and goals, it is time to start bringing your vision to life! There are so many different styles when it comes to fireplaces, would you chose a modern, electric fireplace? Or perhaps a traditional, open hearth fireplace? With the holidays coming up, make sure to decorate and dress up your fireplace when you have family and friends over, as it makes a beautiful focal point!
