Rug Rules: Placement + Sizing

One of my favorite parts in interior design is when we get our orders in and the styling process begins! Knowing how to style your home is just as important as buying the right pieces. We’re going to share with you a few rug rules that we abide by when styling living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms.

Living Room Rules:

  1. Make sure the front legs of your sofa/accent chair are on the rug. You may also have the rug fit entirely underneath the furniture, but try to stay away from the furniture not being on the rug at all. Is there a rug that you fell in love with, but the sizing is too small for your space? You can always layer it on top of a natural fiber rug, such as a sisal or jute rug.

  1. Most living rooms will use a 8×10 or 9×12 rug. Take into account that 16”-18” is the ideal distance between the sofa and the coffee table.

  1. When placing your rug in your living room, you want to make sure that you are leaving  space between the walls and the rug. Rule of thumb is for smaller rooms to have about 18” of space from the rug to the wall, and 24” from wall to rug for bigger sized rooms.

Bedroom Rug Rules:

  1. When placing a rug underneath the bed, you want to try to have at least 24” of rug showing on each side of the bed. The bigger the room is the more inches of rug you want on the sides.

  1. A guideline you can follow for bedroom rugs is King: 9×12, Queen: 8×10, Full: 6×9, and a Twin bed: 5×8.

Dining Room Rug Rules:

  1. Dining room rugs are not something that everyone wants, but it can definitely help bring in color and texture to the room.

  1. For a dining room rug, you want to have at least 24” of rug behind each chair. When you are pulling out the chair, it should still be on the rug. You’ll find that most dining tables will require a rug that is 8’ across. A standard dining room rug size is usually 8×10 or 9×12.

Remember that these guidelines are here to help you, not restrict you! Always follow what feels best for you and your home 🙂 Would you like to see more tips on styling? Let us know down below!
